Tooth Whitening
A realistic view
What causes tooth discolorations?
Common causes of tooth discolorations (darkening, yellowing etc.) include aging, consumption of staining substances (coffee, tea, colas, tobacco), trauma leading to nerve degeneration, tetracycline staining, excessive fluoride and old amalgam (silver) restorations.
Who benefits from tooth whitening?
Almost anyone can benefit and a high percentage of our patients achieve good to excellent results. However, some patients may realize minimal benefit due to the nature of their existing discolorations. Therefore, it is essential that a thorough oral evaluation and diagnosis be done to determine predictability.
Is it safe?
Prior research has shown that the whitening process (utilizing carbamide peroxide gel at a neutral pH, as used in our practice) under the supervision of your dentist is safe for both teeth and gums.
What is involved?
A specially designed custom gel holding appliance is fabricated for each patient. Only the targeted surfaces of your teeth come in contact with the gel. The structure of the teeth is not changed during the whitening process. This custom fitted tray fits snugly over your teeth, is comfortable and is critical to the success of the whitening process.
How fast will my teeth whiten?
Visible results are frequently seen in 2-3 days and maximum whitening generally occurs when the process is continued for about 2 weeks.
What about the numerous over the counter products?
Over the counter products utilize a self-made heat molded tray which holds the gel loosely and allows it to run easily and come in contact with all surfaces of your teeth and gums. In addition, the gel is at a lower concentration and at an unknown pH (a non-neutral pH may adversely affect your teeth and gums).
Should I have my teeth whitened?
Not everyone inherits nice white teeth and therefore many patients will appreciate the benefits of tooth whitening, such as enhanced self-confidence, improved social interactions and a smile you can be proud of. The treatment our office provides is an dentist-supervised home whitening procedure with Nite-White Excel or Day-White.
