Dental Sealants
What you need to know

What are sealants?

A dental sealant is a thin plastic film painted on the chewing surfaces of the molar and premolar teeth (teeth in front of the molars). These teeth have deep grooves called pits and fissures which trap food and bactieria easily. In addition, the grooves are so tiny and narrow, they evade the toothbrush. Sealants protect the pits and fissures of these teeth by acting as a physical barrier to decay.

Who needs to have it?

Children (6 years and above) and teenagers are very susceptible to tooth decay due to the nature of their diets and their often inadequate oral hygiene habits. It is at this period that sealants have their maximum benefits.

How effective are they?

Scientific studies have proven that properly applied sealants are 100% effective in protecting tooth chewing surfaces from tooth decay.

Have your children's teeth been sealed yet?

The process takes no more than a half hour and there are no needles, no drilling and no pain. Our office highly recommends all newly erupted adult premolars and molars (in children) be sealed to protect them from decay. Sealants cost significantly less than fillings and are therefore an extremely wise preventive investment.
